One of the best shows i have ever seen. it was very short, just about an hour but the venue was really cool and the band sounded great. Place was pretty packed and they sold tix at the door as well not sure how many though, place was about the size of the TLA and was essentially full. as far as new songs he played in no particular order, e-pro, que onda, girl, scarecrow, broken drum, hell yes, black tambourine. played a bunch of old stuff, obviously where its at, also nicotine and gravy, peaches and cream, forget the rest right now. i think he played a few songs that were new that were not from any version of guero.

overall the band was really tight some songs ended kind of abruptly but there were also a few really good jams goin on. had a different bass player than he usually does, drummer, keyboard/guitar, and then this crazy dancer guy who played percussion type instruments sporadically but basically danced like napoleon dynamite the entire time. guess it was funny to watch but would have been better if it was a chick.

crowd was pretty good, but u could def tell a lot of people didn't really know any of beck's stuff, a ton of people there through guestlists and stuff like that. they were all havin a great time and beck continually amazes me, he is really one of the best performers i have ever seen and puts on a hell of a show

ts2002 Posted: 04/16/05 1:51AM ET

just got back right now

show was so sick, I can't believe how tight his band is. makes 70VP sound like a bunch of amateurs

"e-pro, que onda, girl, scarecrow, broken drum, hell yes, black tambourine."

black tambourine opener was cool
que onda is the bomb
scarecrow was trippy and jammed out
what was that "we dance at night" thing? great stuff when they turned the dance floor lights on the crowd

devils haircut, nicotine & gravy, where it's at, peaches & cream were all funked out

great great show - only complaint it was way too short. he has enough material to rock out 2 sets...

venue was awesome except for the line to get in. I would love to see some other bands there. MMW would fucking destroy that place

overall just really impressed with Beck. quality stuff. I wish I had brought stealth mics. I was in the "sweet spot" and that show needed to be taped

lmao at the napoleon dynamite dancer - I wish I had his job

that was it - "we dance alone"

they dropped the space-funk and hit the disco lights on the crowd

no scalpers whatsoever- since it was will-call only. there were about 50-60 people waiting in a "standby" line but don't know if they got in or not. the line to get in sucked - about 45 minutes, beck even acknowledged it saying "we appreciate you guys waiting out in the cold"

they let people in either will-call or guest-list. then inside there was a guest-list only section at the tables and upstairs lounge

scene was typical NYC hipster too-cool-for-school crowd
not a lot of people getting down

I have to completely disagree with the "would have been better if it was a chick" comment. That wouldn't have been nearly as amusing.

I don't have much else to contribute to what's already been said (read my long, convoluted blog entry about it in which the conclusion is "Beck is great"). Show was great and while it would've been nice if it were longer, I loved it. Here are my photos.

Setlist:

Black Tambourine
Devil's Haircut
Scarecrow
We Dance Alone
Guero
Girl
Knock You Out
Remain in Dark
Nicotine & Gravy
Broken Drum
Hell Yes
Where It's At
E-Pro

aw, good pictures. he looks happier than he did in London...(it sounds like it might have been a better show too...London was great, but you could tell Beck was tired)
I told my little sister to try and get tickets for New York, but then i realised that she's not 18.

looking forward to the tour.

wow thx for those great pictures, great shots. Also, what a wonderful review of things, it sounds like you had a lot of fun, and that the shows have really evolved since the early warmups in the southland. I think this is the greatest fan review of a show ever! I read quite a bit of your blog as well. Someone's a great scribe. You did good. No, you did gooder.

what kind of camera did you use?
the settings were perfect!

thanks

I was lucky enough to get in as well... as one of the sad people who didn't originally have tickets, I can report to you that yes, a bunch of the people waiting were allowed inside in time to see the entire show.

here are my pics. I'm so tired I didn't get to write about it, but more will come later!:

http://www.themodernage.org/2005/04/where-its-at.html

i thought the secret show at Maxwell's was better b/c there were less people standing around like they'd never seen and/or heard beck before. I was up by the balcony, so I got a good view of the audience... there were times when not a SOUL on the left-hand side of the room was moving... even during "Where It's At"!!!! So wrong...

anyway, was great to be there!!!

hooray!

I'm glad you guys like the review and photos! smile.gif Yeah, he looked very happy. A happy Beck is a good Beck. Now I feel more Beck crazy than before. Dammit. I should probably scan those magazine features I've had for weeks...

timmfnreed: I did gooder! ;D Thanks for your nice comments, they made me happy. I use a
Sony DSCP72 Cybershot, which is kind of old by now in the world of digital cameras. But that makes it somewhat cheap now! I don't think Sony cameras are known for being that great but I like mine--it's somewhat idiot-proof. You can actually read more information about the photos by clicking on the "More properties" link under "Additional information" on the right side of the page. Flickr is cool like that.

laura: I'm so happy to hear that you and other ticket-less people got in! Some people weren't moving? WHAT? That's wrong! I hardly move but even I MOVED! Beck made me move! That's quite a feat. A guy I was standing near was dancing the whole time. (He seemed like a pretty big fan; right after the show ended, he LUNGED for the setlist. Really, lunged. The guy behind me kind of lunged as well but actually asked one of the guys on stage for one while the other guy tried to rip it off the stage.)

Loved the photos Roboppy and the story. I think the big-ass maraca thing is a Djembe. (do we pronounce the j or not I don't know) it has more beady things than an Armani jacket.
