H'wood Reporter Review, KCRW Show

Here's a review with more about Beck's performance at the KCRW "A Sounds Eclectic Evening" (click on link for complete text and file pic)

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/revie...tent_id=2037922

Text:

KCRW Sounds Eclectic

By Darryl Morden

Bottom line: On paper, it didn't look that eclectic at all, populated by so many singer-songwriters, but a diversity of styles emerged over a fine night.

Universal Amphitheatre
Sunday, Nov. 23

Santa Monica-based public radio station KCRW (89.9 FM) is one of the few outlets in Southern California where various artists usually ignored by commercial airwaves receive some solid exposure, and the annual Sounds Eclectic evening has become an extension of that support.

While a bill heavy with singer-songwriter types didn't appear as though it would be all that eclectic, that was certainly the case. A stylistic mixing of lineup order helped bring out the drastic differences among various artists. Key performances came from the ever-engaging Beck, Ireland's harrowing and acclaimed Damien Rice, a surprise guest in Shelby Lynne and the symphonic choral feel-good pop of the night's closers, the Polyphonic Spree.

Playing in the middle of the evening, truly the heart of the show, Beck performed solo on acoustic guitar and keyboard, with no set plan he said, though brilliant nonetheless. Beck's vocals have become richer during the years, touched by the bittersweet for "Golden Age," from last year's "Sea Change." The quirky singer performed a Hank Williams cover as well as singing an impromptu "Happy Birthday" for a woman in the crowd and paid tribute to the late Elliott Smith with a couple of songs. He then loosened up, taking a seat at the electric piano and adjusting beats from a little drum machine, mixing snatches of Nelly's "Hot in Herre" with his own "Where It's At."

Singer-songwriter Rice won the Shortlist Prize this year, and his performance showed that he's clearly deserving of all the accolades, matching the soothing balm of some songs with cleansing releases of sonic exchanges with his band, which included a cellist adding to the textures and emotional drama. Playing a battered old acoustic guitar, from delicate strums to brutal feedback, Rice shared vocals with the often-haunting Lisa Hannigan. The stage was shrouded in darkness for the elegiac probing on death "Cold Water," as the mournful coda was on the rise, while other confessionals like "Cannonball" found Rice tightly wound and intense.

Clad in long white robes, exalting the joys of life and sunshine glory, the Polyphonic Spree is the 24-member Dallas symphony and choir including harp and horns led by ex-Tripping Daisy singer Tim Delaughter. A collision of Brian Wilson positives, the chipper cheer of the King and Partridge families, gospel fervor and even some prog rock, the group's suit of songs is hard to resist. They may still field a left-field hit with "Light and Day," from their "Good Music/Hollywood" album, now also an Apple iPod/VW joint TV ad, which onstage shifted by its end into the refrain of the nearly lost 1970s hit "Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image.

Performing without her band, an acoustic guitar and her stunning so-Southern and bluesy voice of honey, butter and two shots of whiskey was all Lynne needed to captivate. Her short handful of songs included the regret-filled "Telephone" and revealing self-examination of "If I Were Smart" plus her Patsy Cline homage, "Lonesome," all from her current Capitol album, "Identity Crisis."

A set from Jurassic 5, who proceeded Rice for quite a contrast, was by no means the token hip-hop act on the bill. The group was playful and fun, bringing audience members to their feet with dual DJ's spinning lively samples underneath a quartet of rapping with plenty of interplay that may not have been actual harmonies, but certainly was descended from doo-wop in its vocal unity.

Also appearing were onetime 1990s alternative pro rocker-grrl Liz Phair, stripped down from her VH-1 star phase these days, plus singer-songwriter Gary Jules in folksy mode, his set including his version of Tears for Fears' "Mad World," recorded for the soundtrack to the film "Donnie Darko," and young English singer Jem, with a DJ and bass player, her hip-hop-dosed pop songs making her sound like a funkier Dido.

A Cheery Hello To My Former Bbs Brethren...

Hello all, I hope at least one or two of you remember me from the ol' BBS. It's sad but for some reason I can't access it from my laptop anymore and, as pathetic as it sounds, I've actually missed the place - the frequently inane conversations of Blackhole tended to bore me but there were so many people with great, varied music taste floating about... It's that "reference group" (marketing-speak, gack...) ambience that I enjoyed the most, always seeing the names of bands or singers I didn't know in the Songs You Like Today threads, looking up about them and sometimes getting into them, just through repeated exposure. Sigh...

Anyway, I'm here in Japan right now and, after a very very tough first two months, I'm having a cool time. If anyone's interested you can have a look at my photo page...

anybodywannatakemehome's photos

...to get a living! breathing! summary of what I've been up to. I fear my "online experience" won't quite be the same until I am able to get back to The Big Pink once again but until that time I guess I can be content at living in such a beautiful and crazy country as this (who's up for Christmas dinner in a Forrest Gump-themed shrimp restaurant?!)...

Bye bye...

Currently Listening to: Stereolab - Check and Double Check

Appreciation

I am writing this in lieu of sending email to truck at beck.com, and also to point out how much this site has helped in recent days.

For Truck and Gang at Beck.com:

Thank you for giving us so much time and attention, no matter how wacky the question, no matter how angry or upset or nosy or crabby or just annoying posters can be (I apply these words to me here--not anyone else)--you guys--and Truck is the master at this, always listen, and say, let me get back to you, or, heres an answer you might not have considered. That site keeps me sane when a Monday is a drag or I need a lift, or just whenever I wanna read about new music--anybodys, not just Becks--or when I need to reassure myself that yes, radically soul-satisfyin' art is happening, and will continue to, and we can read about it anytime we like. So kudos to the team. I hope all is well. Better than well. I hope you know an awful lot of people here are concerned for you. You. Are. Missed.

For Stewoo and the gang here:

How gratifying to find a place that fulfills the BBS-lust, for lack of a better word. Really, Im amazed. Kudos all around; it doesnt surprise me, though, that this should have happened here. I love these boards. This place just really picked up my spirits completely. And since Im so out of the loop on new music, its (like the Beck.com bbs) a real education for me. Well done.
