This is my technique for ranking Beck's albums:

1. I

2. Don't

3. Give

4. A

5. Fuck

6. About

7. Stupid

8. Ranking

9. Articles

10. On

11. The

12. Internet

My most favorite of them all is number B.

Mutations last?! That'd be my number 1

I'd also have Morning Phase higher and Mellow Gold lower down.

Also, what happened to One Foot in the Grave and Stereopathetic Soulmanure?

And sorry for being pedantic... it's Midnite Vultures, not Midnight.

Aww sorry! :( I really like it but I lean more towards the others.

Ahh really? Yeah I just felt like Morning Phase was slightly safe and I love Mellow Gold, the way it flows from start to finish is brilliant.

Well I chose to leave out his independent releases and focus on his major label albums.

*tuts* Nahh that's a silly error on my part, don't know how I managed to miss the mistake!

It's hard for me to rank his albums, to be honest. A. they are so different, diifcult to compare. B. They are all so good.

I personally lean more towards his melodic side, so Mutations, Sea Change and Morning Phase are always winners. But that said, there are times when only Odelay or Midnite Vultures would do. And I love his more experimental side, found on The Information and to an extent Modern Guilt. Modern Guilt is actually one of my faves. Ppssibly the closest he ever got to marry the two sides of his music - the introspective singer songwriter and the upbeat energetic stuff.

If I were forced to make a list, it would probably look something like this.

1. Mutations

2. Sea Change

3. Morning Phase

4. Modern Guilt

5. Odelay

6. Midnite Vultures

7. Guero/The Information (not sure which I'd have first)

8. One Foot in the Grave

9. Mellow Gold

10. Stereopathetic Soulmanure

11. Golden Feelings

But really, apart from the early ones, with all the others there's very little in it.

That's true, I had to be as critical as possible to even rank them. There aren't many missteps in his discography.

Yeah I know what you mean, he has wide range of styles. I actually thought that Morning Phase was a step back from The Information and Modern Guilt but I do prefer it when he really gets creative and takes risks like on Midnite Vultures (phew) and even Guero to be honest. I also love his early, folky stuff like One Foot In The Grave and Stereopathetic Soulmanure.

But as you say, they are all great in there own, unique way. Good point about Modern Guilt too, it does feel like the perfect blend of both his mature and playful sides.

I couldn't disagree more about Sing It Again and Dead Melodies, by the way. Dead Melodies is one of my favourite Beck songs and I would never describe Sing It Again as "plodding"!

I suppose it's a testament to Beck's diverse output that people find different things to love about his music, whatever their taste.

I'd say that's more than not being a fan of his "most recent stuff". That's dismissing anything he has done past 1994. Which is a lot.

He should have retired after "The Banjo Story".
