Topics I've Started

Beck - Fox Theatre, Oakland CA (USA)

16 July 2017 - 12:40 PM

Last night (July 15 2017) was the second night in a row having Beck perform in the Bay Area (Northern California) ... this time in Oakland and the Fox Theatre.

The set list was fairly similar, however Beck did say they'd play a few different songs from the previous night (show in Berkeley) - Sissyneck, Jack-ass, Blackbird Chain and Wave.

Some notes on the show - Jason Faulker has a nice solo at the end of Go It Alone, something pretty different from the recorded version; Wave was an interesting inclusion, Beck had a strong reverb on his vocals as you might expect to recreate the sound from the Morning Phase recording; the band right now has a group of three additional backing musicians that Beck is referring to as the B-53s (during the band intros there theme song is 'Rock Lobster' by the B-52s).

Finally, Beck is clearly getting ready for summer festivals and other large stadium shows (for example, the U2 tour in the USA). He's said the feel of the new album is summertime festivals and fun; so he is working hard on creating crowd interaction - sometimes it's working, sometimes it's not quite working. He is practicing an 'improvised crowd song' during the band introductions (calling it the 'audience song') - he divides the crowd into four sections, asks them each to sing back a particular note, then does a short improvisation/rap. We'll see if this evolves over the rest of the shows this year.

For anyone still interested ... here is the setlist from Beck's show tonight (14 July 2017) in Berkeley, California.

The opening act was Thundercat - and later Stephen Bruner from Thundercat, joined Beck and the band on-stage for Where It's At.
During an extended version of Where It's At, and as part of the band introductions, Thundercat performed the song Show You The Way (with additional vocals from Jason Faulkner and Roger Manning Jr).

Also during Where It's At - Beck improvise a short song about San Francisco.

Beck in San Francisco, 29 Oct 2015 (Oracle Appreciation Event)

29 October 2015 - 11:10 AM

Note: performance was 28 October (not 29 October as listed in the topic title/heading - sorry!)

Last night on Treasure Island (San Francisco) Beck performed as part of the Oracle Appreciation Event (Oracle OpenWorld Conference).

The headline artist was Elton John; he started late and played a long set, which meant that Beck only started at 11:30pm (the event was advertised to finish at midnight, however Beck performed until 12:50pm).

Setlist:

Loser

Devils Haircut

Black Tambourine

Guero

The New Pollution

Think I'm in Love (I Feel Love)

Hell Yes (8-Bit Version)

Mixed Bizness

Sissyneck (Billie Jean)

Soul of a Man

Interesting notes ... Beck said he would play three songs in a row from Sea Change, but ended up playing just two due to time constraints. He also noted that Girl was a special request. This was my first time hearing Dreams perfomed live.

Band was JMJ, Roger M, Joey W, Jason F.
