I apologize if this thread has already been made. If so, just ignore this. :PaperBag:

What are your top 10 Beck songs and why?

Here's a top ten from the point of view of a total Beck n00b.

10. Ramshackle

When I first bought Odelay I was a little bit disappointed because I was used to 'Sea Change'-type Beck. It wasn't that the music was bad, it was just a totally different style and I didn't really get the whole Beck thing back then. This song is amazing and was the first song I really 'got' on the album. It has this amazing Futuristic Bob Dylan vibe (as in what if he were still making music).

9. We Dance Alone

Once I got into the whole 'different' nature of Beck, Odelay and The Information became my favorites for a while. I can predict that this isn't a popular song here, but it is one of my favorites.

8. Nicotine & Gravy

I saw Midnite Vultures on a shelf at HMV and thought "What the...?" and I just had to buy it. This song makes the album for me.

7. E-Pro / Que Onda Guero / Girl

I'm a big fan of the first three Guero songs... I can't get into the rest. Combined, these songs have some of Beck's best writing and moments. I really like how Girl is an acoustic rock song that spawns from old-school gaming noises.

6. Sexx Laws

My first laugh-out-loud moment from Beck (Odelay was more of a shock, I never got to laugh at it). I guess I heard this song on Futurama before the next one, but I was unaware that Beck was a real person.

5. The Golden Age

My real first Beck song... such a beautiful opener. It sets such a perfect mood. I like to listen to my Sea Change and Kid A vinyls back to back. Two different amazing kinds of 'chill'.

4. Cold Brains

Mutations is a great album, and it works best as an album, not as separate songs. That said, Cold Brains has amazing lyrics, and much like The Golden Age, sets a great mood.

3. Movie Theme

This song is just pure beauty dipped into pure gold.

2. Hotwax

I don't think I need to explain myself this time around.

1. Paper Tiger

Yeah Nigel! (Sorry, some RH pride showing...) Seriously, this song is within my top 10 songs of all time. The writing, the orchestration, everything is perfect.

So that's mine. What about you?

I havnt heard all of them, but so far (not really in order):

1. Loser - something about the beat makes me go crazy. And plus Im obsessed with slide guitar. And becks unique voice and lyrics bring it all together

2. Hotwax - again a good beat and all the effects. an all around good song. plus I like the effect on his voice during the chorus

3. Farewell Ride - like I said i love the slide guitar. this song has a cool eerie sound but its soothing at the same time

4. Girl - i like the lyrics to this song. and its very upbeat. it really emphasizes how good beck can sing when hes not rapping. plus, slide guitar solo

5. We dance alone - i dont know what it is about the song, but every time i hear it, i gotta sing along with it. i love when beck is rapping and using a very faint voice like in this one. like a whisper almost

6. Nausea - this is just a good all around sound. punkish but yet acoustic and folky at the same time. its great when they do it live too

7. High Five - this is 100% my favorite beck hip hop song. its beat its powerful. the effect on becks voice is really cool to me. I especially love the lyrics and the way he yells when he says "Rockin the plastic like a man from the Catskills"

8. Sexx Laws - this is really funky and smoothe sounding. and the theme of what hes saying is cool and funny. you cant beat beck hitting a high note either. and plus, jack black was in the video

9. Novacane - this song is like a muxture of everything: funk, hip hop, folk, rock, you name it. and i go nouts on that part at the end where its kind of like a breakdown and he goes NOVACANE

10. Cell phones dead - for one, this song is kind of how i started listening to beck. it was on a beck marathon on mtv really late at night and i loved it. the everchanging sond is great. and ever since i heard that song, beck has been practically the only thing i listen to.

Its hard to decide though because I love all of his songs like crazy. And Im sure that list will change when the new album drops

As Mellow pointed out, there was already a topic like this, so I should probably just cut and paste my answer from there....I doubt it's changed much. Though I have to admit, I didn't offer any explanations of mine like you have. Maybe after I do this work I gotta do I will come back to this....

Copy/pasted from the other thread...

1. Debra
2. Earthquake Weather
3. Peaches & Cream
4. Beercan
5. End Of The Day
6. Loser
7. Strange Apparition
8. Runners Dial Zero
9. The Golden Age
10. Rental Car

Glad I remembered to add End Of The Day the first time. Best song on the album. I would include Lost Cause but it's just so incredibly sad...I can barely listen to it anymore.

PS: Paper Tiger is absolutely fantastic, even if it does nick Gainsbourg.

Oh, and I want to give some love to Forcefield, which has quickly become a favorite of mine. I remember making a thread a year or so ago bashing One Foot In The Grave, but it has grown on me a lot lately. It's still not a favorite album of mine, but getting up there more quickly than anticipated.

'ello, I was so excited to reply to this and then I was fighting with myself trying to pick 10, I realized I would have to sleep on this and since I just got fired today by my very own sister, I will have all day tomorrow to whip out everything I have, eat probably some ice cream and really focus on this one task. I'll focus and make rational decisions about this matter which I will be able to stand by if challenged. I am Jen and I am new hear, ok, here. I am a perfectly normal and rational person.

LOL! MCD, ya think? Oh yeah, I am so pissed but I won't waste your time on that. Here is my list! Had to get my mind off the firing...Oh, but I agreed w/ your 8,7,6,2 $ 1. I'm getting inspired to do a mixtape now. Very well.

This is Top 10 is hard because Beck has the twofold genius of the lyric and the music. So since I appreciate them both almost equally (I love his beats most best), that is my statement of purpose. Notice there’s no Seachange or Mutations here. I haven’t spent any time with sad Beck. I know I should. Maybe now that I’m sad, I will!!!

#1 Earthquake Weather- music & lyrics, perfectly symmetrical, orgasmic and perfect. That even looks stupid to write but indulge me b/c I am sad today.

#2-Arabian Nights what more can I say, nothing cuz I can’t think of anything to say.

#3- Today Has been a fucked up day. Just b/c whever I’m having a bad day, this song has made it’s way into my inner monologue/vernacular.

#4- Truck Drivin Neighbors Downstairs- high hilarity. I love the back story, too. I live in an apartment in the ghetto in Minneapolis and lemme tell ya, I have had this experience a time or two. I mean I have had retards, crazy bitches, drunks, crackfiends, bored assholes, someone put an ‘I Love Gay Porn’ sticker on the passenger side of my car a few months ago, which I didn’t notice for 2 days. So yeah, this is the song. And the thing is, I really don't love gay porn.

#5- High 5- Ooh lala Sassoon

#6- Cellphones Dead- beats. I turn that shit all the way up in my car like that shit was Britney Spears b4 she became a fat guy.

#7 Strange Apparition- This is one where the beats are killa, the lyrics are perfect and the whole thing comes together, it’s quintessential Beck.

#8 Little Drum Machine Boy- a classic Hanukah song, the coolest Jewish Holiday song ever written. Will be played and adored long after Beck is dead. Just a classic. “I get down, I get down, I get down all the way.” Who doesn’t love that?

#9 E-Pro- “nana- I killed all my friends…nana-I killed all my friends”…and big ups/mad props to da Beasties?! OMG- if beck called me and asked what to do for this song, we would have come up with E-Pro together.

#10-Debra- b/c of that blond chick Debra. And plus my name is Jen. I'm a literal kinda girl.

There must be something very different about those songs compared to the rest of the album because I'm the opposite: I really like Guero except for those three songs.

I second the love for those songs (as well as others on the album). I'm also very fond of the video, though it's not my absolute favorite because I realize I mainly like it cos it's early footage of Beck.

OT but I have an idea. I say we host a Beck Partay right here in Minneapolis and invite just everyone on this forum, yeah? And I'm over 21, so I'll buy the Hennessy. Then, after someone underage drives their car into the Mississippi, I'll take full responsibility and end up doing 3-5 at Shakopee Women's Prison. Yay! JK, there's nothing funny about me doing 3 to 5 in prison or underage drinking.

But really, we should host a get-down right here in Minneapolis the next time Beck comes to town.

I love that song also even though it was a fake copy! hehe just kidding. Beck did an awesome job recreating that sound with "Paper Tiger". Sorta like what he is doing with the new single "ChemTrails"?
