beck's appearance was a great surprise - with ben harper, jimmy vivino, billy gibbons, max weinberg, CONAN, et. al it was a real supergroup up there
BUT,
neil young stole it. his solo acoustic rendition of "long may you run" made me well up with tears both times i have seen it. a perfect song choice and performance for its lyrical content, even more so than "freebird"

well the song itself didn't really resonate with me (that is to say i didn't really hear it) until beck played with with the philharmonic backing him at the hollywood bowl 2008. in that setting it made me re-think how beck values his songs, regardless of how old they are, when picking out a setlist. in other words, i was surprised he chose it for the philharmonic set and it's funny you ask because replica stuck with me more than maybe any other song choice.
having said that i don't think i've ever comprehended the lyrics. for some reason - probably the title - evokes fleeting thoughts of the movie Blade Runner and artificial intelligence. but for you i will listen or read the lyrics and get back to you. most of the time i just let beck songs wash over me as i absorb the music and words simultaneously though never with inordinate scrutiny. thanks for bringing this up.
oh yeah, i think i am going to try and change my handle to 3po1nt0 so you'll know if i do.

i got home last night and tried to turn the p-pod off, it pinwheeled, i did a hard restart and lost artist/album/track name information for my entire library. i think beck's autograph was too much for this little gizmo!
also, stainless steel isn't good for a sharpie autograph, some of it rubbed right off so i applied a transparent piece of tape to preserve the signature.
