'This one hit home to me and became extremely hard to finish.
Everything I was seeing seemed to echo the sentiment, but I wanted it to be
simple. This song feels so sad and bleak and biting, but I can't help seeing
hope in it. So she may not have arms, but maybe she can use the wings. The
moon could be her head? She is a goddess, afterall.' |

'The thinking behind this piece is of Beck trying to lead a normal life (like stacked coffee cups - about as normal & mundane as you can get) against total chaos in his normal life. He repeats 'Guess Im Doing Fine' many times during the chorus of the song in irony, as if he had to convince himself.'

'Bright colours suggest optimism and lightness of spirit, but a human figure at the left is revealed unable to move an apparent wall, trapped in a nonsensical system which appears to be generated from the random red shape near the centre of the painting. In the lower right hand corner, another figure sits, similarly restricted by a grid of coloured lines. How are they doing? Fine, of course.'

'The 'doing fine' piece mainly summarizes the feel of the whole Sea Change album for me. This illustration was inspired by 3 songs, now that I think of it....'little one', 'lost cause' and 'guess i'm doing fine'. The painting portrays beck, small and insignificant compared to the sea. He has no oars, so he must go wherever the current takes him.....and the current seems to be leaving a relationship behind. As beck reflects on that relationship, he sings the blues and feels the sea could pull him under at any moment.
With any luck, beck's boat will port somewhere, and he'll
make an album about that. I'm looking forward to it.' |

'I was so inspired by the SCAP some time ago I put this Fluxus-style assembly together. It's based on "Guess I'm Doing Fine" lyrics. I literally "pressed my face" against the glass of this frame, and then brushed some makeup/eyeshadow until the image became somewhat visible. So being that it was on glass .... it was almost unphotographable. I couldn't get the image to show up, for instance with my friend's digital, the flash would simply bounce off the glass. I used a lot of natural light from a window and finally got it!'
